If you’d told us in January that in just 7 months the government would be paying people to eat out, we would have choked on our chicken tikka. But that is exactly what they’re doing!
In case you missed it, earlier today (8th July 2020), the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announced the launch of the “Eat Out To Help Out” scheme. This scheme entitles consumers to a mouth-watering 50% discount on meals up to £10 per head.
It’s clear the government are keen to give the economy the injection it so desperately needs after months of lockdown and this scheme will be welcome news to many establishments up and down the country.
There are a few stipulations to the scheme. Diners will only be able to use the discount on Mondays to Wednesdays throughout August. However, customers will be able to use this discount an unlimited amount of times in this window. Participating outlets will be fully reimbursed for the 50% discount. Businesses will be able to register for the scheme on the government’s website from the 13th July.
In addition to this, the government have also announced that between 15th July 2020 – 12th January 2021, they will be cutting VAT for food and non-alcoholic drinks. Further information on this will be published in the coming days.
